What sealing and closing equipment does

Sealing and closing equipment protects the product and keeps it intact — using heat, pressure, induction or adhesives. The category is broader than most buyers realise: a tray sealer for prepared food, a MAP gas-flush sealer for shelf life, and an induction sealer for a bottle cap are three different machines that share one word.

Sealing methods: tray, vacuum, MAP and induction

A tray sealer closes a rigid tray with lidding film; a vacuum or MAP sealer replaces or modifies the air inside the pack to extend shelf life; an induction sealer welds a foil liner to a bottle or container neck. Each solves a different pack format and shelf-life problem, so the first decision is which sealing problem you actually have.

Selection factors that decide the sealer

  • Pack format: tray, bag, pouch, bottle or container.
  • Shelf-life requirement: whether MAP or vacuum is needed.
  • Seal integrity: agree a defined test method and pass value before purchase.
  • Hygiene build: whether the machine meets a recognised sanitary design standard for food.

Knowledge

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

What types of sealing machines are there?
The category spans tray sealers, vacuum and MAP gas-flush sealers, band sealers, and induction cap sealers. A tray sealer closes a rigid tray with lidding film; a vacuum or MAP sealer extends shelf life; an induction sealer welds a foil liner to a bottle or container neck. They are different machines for different pack formats.
What is MAP, and why does it depend on the seal?
Modified Atmosphere Packaging replaces the air inside a pack with a controlled gas mixture to slow microbial growth and oxidation. The modified atmosphere only works as long as the seal keeps it in, so seal-integrity testing belongs in the acceptance test for any MAP line.
How much does a sealing machine cost?
A hand impulse sealer can cost under a hundred dollars, continuous band sealers roughly $500–$5,000, vacuum or gas-flush sealers roughly $1,000–$30,000+, and tray sealers from a few thousand dollars for semi-automatic up to six figures for automated MAP lines. Confirm tooling, changeover and film compatibility in the quote.
How do I guarantee seal integrity?
Agree a defined test method and pass value before purchase — seal strength by a peel method such as ASTM F88, leak integrity by bubble emission (ASTM F2096) or burst (ASTM F1140). Then demand a witnessed run on your tray and film, not a lab sample.
What is the difference between heat sealing and induction sealing?
Heat sealing presses heated elements or bands against thermoplastic film to weld two film layers together — it closes bags, pouches and tray lidding. Induction sealing heats a foil liner inside a bottle cap with an electromagnetic field, bonding it to the container lip. Heat sealing closes film; induction sealing closes caps.
What is vacuum skin packaging (VSP)?
Vacuum skin packaging evacuates the air from a tray and draws heated film down onto the product so it conforms like a second skin, sealing across the full tray base. It immobilises the product and gives a premium skin-tight presentation, and it suits premium meat, fish and marinated items better than a standard gas-flushed MAP dome.
How fast is a tray sealing machine, and what actually limits the speed?
Automatic tray sealers run from a few packs per minute up to roughly 200+ per minute on high-speed multi-lane machines, but the real constraint is usually format: tray size, gas-flush dwell, film index time and changeover. Compare machines on sustained packs-per-minute for your exact tray, not on the brochure maximum.
How do I verify the gas in a MAP pack?
A residual oxygen analyser measures the oxygen left in the sealed pack — the check that proves the gas flush actually worked. Specify the analyser, the sampling frequency and the reject threshold in the acceptance test, and confirm the machine supplier or gas supplier provides the analyser rather than leaving it to the operator.
