What form-fill-seal machinery does

Form-fill-seal (FFS) equipment forms a package from rollstock film, fills it with product, and seals it in one continuous operation — no premade container required. The category splits into two architectures: vertical (VFFS) and horizontal (HFFS, or flow wrapping). A VFFS machine folds film into a vertical tube and drops the product in from above; an HFFS machine carries the pack horizontally past forming, filling and sealing stations.

Vertical vs horizontal: the decision starts with the product

The first filter is whether your product can free-fall. Granules, powders, snacks and frozen pieces suit VFFS; fragile, flat or irregularly shaped products, and premium pouch or flow-wrap formats, suit HFFS.   • Product behaviour: free-flowing versus bridging, dusting, smearing or fragile.
  • Pack format: pillow bag, gusseted bag, stick pack, sachet or flow wrap.
  • Target output: intermittent-motion versus continuous-motion versus rotary — measured in bags per minute on your product, not a headline number.
  • Film and sealing: the film must seal reliably at production speed; verify seal strength on your film, not the vendor’s.

What is the difference between a VFFS and an HFFS machine?
A VFFS machine forms a bag around a vertical tube and lets the product fall into it, which suits free-flowing products such as snacks, powders and granules. An HFFS machine carries the pack horizontally past forming, filling and sealing stations, which suits fragile, flat or irregularly shaped products and premium pouch formats. The choice starts with whether your product can free-fall.
How much does a VFFS machine cost?
Entry-level intermittent-motion VFFS machines typically run roughly $1,640 to $17,800 FOB, mid-range servo and continuous-motion machines roughly $15,000 to $120,000, and high-end rotary or multi-lane systems roughly $25,000 to $150,000. HFFS flow wrappers start around $4,300. Confirm a machine-specific quote for your film, product and output.
What products can a form-fill-seal machine run?
VFFS machines run free-flowing products such as snacks, coffee, powders, grains and frozen pieces. HFFS and flow-wrapping machines run bakery, bars, produce, medical devices and other regularly shaped goods. Products that bridge, smear or dust heavily inside a forming tube are usually better on a horizontal machine.
Which film types work with FFS machines?
FFS machines run rollstock films such as polyethylene, polypropylene, laminates and, increasingly, recyclable mono-material films. The film must be qualified at production speed for the machine, because friction, gauge variation, winding quality and static all affect how reliably it forms and seals.
How do I choose a form-fill-seal machine?
Start with the product (does it free-fall?), then the pack format, the target output, the film and the changeover requirement. Validate the shortlisted machine with a witnessed trial on your product and film, and confirm seal strength with a defined test method such as ASTM F88 before you buy.
How long does a VFFS format changeover take?
It depends on the changeover design. Servo-driven changeover is fastest — tna robag FX 3e advertises format changeover in under 1 minute, and Matrix AutoPro changes over by servo. On a manual machine, changing the forming shoulder and sealing jaws takes longer. If you run many SKUs, ask the supplier to demonstrate a full changeover and time it yourself.
Should I choose a continuous-motion or intermittent VFFS machine?
Choose continuous motion when output is the priority — continuous machines reach 300 bags/min or more (Syntegon SVX up to 300), while intermittent machines run lower (PFM R 700/800 up to 140 packs/min). Intermittent motion is cheaper (entry level around $1,640 to $17,800 FOB) and suits lower output or frequent format changes. Continuous and rotary machines sit in a higher price band. Match the motion type to your target output, not the headline number.
Should I buy a new or used VFFS machine?
A new machine brings current sealing technology, a warranty and factory support, and it can be configured for your film and format from the start. A used machine costs less up front but must be verified: check seal integrity on your film, the condition of the forming shoulder and jaws, available change parts, and whether the manufacturer still supports that model. For sanitary or MAP applications, a used machine is harder to guarantee.
