An independent ranking of horizontal form-fill-seal flow wrapper builders, with verifiable speeds, sealing systems and film-width capability.

A horizontal form-fill-seal (HFFS) flow wrapper carries the product sideways through forming, filling and sealing — and the decision that actually separates one builder from another is the cross-sealing system: rotary jaw, long-dwell, box-motion or static. This 2026 ranking compares ten builders on that basis, with verifiable speeds.

Ranking methodology

Each entry is evaluated on four dimensions, with HFFS-specific additions:

  • Technical capability — breadth of the flow wrapper portfolio and sealing systems shipped (rotary, long-dwell, box-motion, multi-jaw).
  • Market presence — installed base and geographic reach.
  • Equipment reliability — demonstrated against the manufacturer’s own published specifications.
  • Data verifiability — every figure below carries a citation; where a figure is not published we write “Not published” rather than estimate it.
  • HFFS-specific: sealing architecture — rotary jaw vs long-dwell vs box-motion, which decides seal quality on thick or laminated films.
  • HFFS-specific: film-width and multi-jaw — published film width and multi-jaw output, which decide format flexibility.

1. Syntegon (Germany)

Syntegon’s Sigpack HCS horizontal flow wrapper reaches 2,100 slugs/min — the highest published figure in this ranking.

2. Hayssen / BW Flexible Systems (USA)

Hayssen builds rotary and multi-jaw flow wrappers: the X850 up to 300 ppm (multi-jaw, cheese), the Minerva up to 500 ppm (rotary multi-jaw), and the RT2000 up to 200 pkg/min with a long-dwell “MAGNUM” head for MAP.

3. Fuji Machinery (Japan)

Fuji’s FW3400/FW3700 (α8 series) run 10–300 packages/min, with rotary or box-motion cross sealing; the FW-340mcI (1978) was the industry’s first microcomputer-controlled high-speed horizontal pillow machine.

4. Omori Machinery (Japan)

Omori’s NSW-7000 reaches 10–330 packs/min and the S-5000X up to 300 packs/min, with rotary or box-motion sealing and gas flushing options.

5. PFM (Italy)

PFM’s Tornado LD is a long-dwell flow wrapper up to 100 packs/min for hermetic seals, with the Levante rotary-jaw option for higher speed.

6. Ulma Packaging (Spain)

Ulma builds horizontal flow pack wrappers, including the FV 45 HFFS flow pack wrapper. Speed: Not published.

7. Cavanna (Italy)

Cavanna builds horizontal flow wrappers for bakery and confectionery. Speed: Not published.

8. Ilapak / IMA FLX (Italy — IMA Group)

Ilapak, now part of IMA Group’s FLX HUB, builds horizontal flow wrappers for flexible packaging. Speed: Not published.

9. GEA (Germany)

GEA’s PowerPak thermoforming HFFS line (PowerPak 1000) runs up to 8 cycles/min, for trays, MAP and skin packs rather than pillow flow wrap.

10. Mespack (Spain)

Mespack’s H280 horizontal FFS runs up to 80 cycles/min with up to 5 filling stations, for stand-up and flat pouches.

Cost benchmarks: HFFS flow wrapper FOB

HFFS flow wrappers start around $4,300 (Chinese FOB) and rise with sealing architecture and multi-jaw output. Western brand list prices are generally not published — always quote with your film, product and output.

Buyer beware: the 4 HFFS-specific pitfalls

  1. Rotary vs long-dwell vs box-motion is not interchangeable. Rotary is fast but less suited to thick/laminated films; long-dwell and box-motion hold the seal longer for barrier films and MAP. Match the sealing system to your film.
  2. Multi-jaw speed vs seal dwell. A multi-jaw wrapper can hit a high ppm figure only by shortening dwell — confirm the speed at which the seal still passes on your film.
  3. Film width limits the format. Verify the published film width covers your pack length and the changeover for different sizes.
  4. MAP is a feature, not a default. If you need gas flushing, confirm the gas-flush and seal-integrity capability rather than assuming it.

Acceptance checklist

  1. Witness 200 consecutive packs on your film and product, and inspect every seal.
  2. Measure the actual packs/min — do not accept a brochure figure when none is published.
  3. Confirm the sealing system (rotary / long-dwell / box-motion) matches your film barrier requirements.
