Hidden costs to price in: freight and customs (landed cost can run FOB + 20–67%), installation and commissioning, tooling and change parts (roughly A$2,000–$12,000 per format), film trials, and the multihead weigher when sold separately. A VFFS quote without the weigher, the change parts and the freight is not a comparable quote.
Buyer Beware: The Top 4 Pitfalls in VFFS/HFFS Procurement
- Seal quality demonstrated on the vendor’s film, not yours. The seal range of a film is the temperature window that actually produces an acceptable seal — and it narrows at production speed versus a lab bench. If the supplier will only demo on its own film, the demonstration proves little about your packaging. Fix: demand trials on your film and product, and measure seal strength on the resulting bags.
- Changeover time quoted as "tool-less" without a witnessed run. A short changeover that operators cannot repeat safely is not short. Fix: witness a full SKU changeover on the floor, including forming shoulder and jaw changes, and time it yourself.
- Speed quoted as bags per minute without seal dwell context. A machine can hit a high bag-per-minute figure only by shortening dwell — which may push the seal out of range on your film. Fix: ask for the speed at which seal integrity still passes on your film, not the headline maximum.
- Hygiene claims without a sanitary design standard. "Washdown" and "sanitary" are not the same as a 3-A or EHEDG design. If the plant requires CIP or sanitary validation, the bagger’s frame, sloped surfaces and seal construction must match that standard — verify the certificate, not the brochure.
The Seal-Integrity Litmus Test: 5 Questions to Ask Before You Buy
- "What seal strength do you guarantee on my film, and by which test method?" Seal strength is measured by a defined peel method such as ASTM F88 (Technique A, 200–300 mm/min); hot tack by ASTM F1921; leak integrity by bubble emission (ASTM F2096) or burst (ASTM F1140). A supplier that cannot name the method and the pass value is not measuring seal quality at all.
- "Show me the seal range of my film on your machine, not a lab sealer." The manufacturing seal range is narrower than the laboratory range; ask the supplier to map where your film actually seals at production speed.
- "How do you control temperature, pressure and dwell independently?" The horizontal seal is a three-variable system; the machine should let you set and log each one, not hide them behind a single "seal" setting.
- "What happens to the seal when film tension spikes during a reel change?" A wandering vertical seal and short bags come from tension disturbance; ask how the unwind and dancer control keep tension constant through splices and reel changes.
- "Will you run 200 consecutive bags on my film and let me inspect every seal?" Intermittent leakers appear at the edge of the seal range; a continuous witnessed run on your film is the only way to expose them before the machine is installed.
The ultimate litmus test: hand the supplier your film and your product and say: "Run 200 bags at the speed you quoted, and I will inspect every seal and weigh every bag." If the answer is a brochure speed or a lab sample, the machine has not yet proven itself for your line.
