What filling and dosing equipment does

Filling and dosing equipment measures and dispenses a liquid or semi-liquid product into bottles, jars, cans, tubes or pouches at a controlled volume or weight. The machine is only part of the answer — the engineering lives in matching the filling method to the product behaviour, the container, and the accuracy the market requires.

Filling methods: gravity to net-weight

The main methods are gravity, overflow, piston, flowmeter (volumetric) and net-weight. Gravity and overflow suit free-flowing, low-viscosity liquids and consistent fill levels; piston suits viscous products and those with particulates; flowmeter and net-weight suit controlled-volume or weight-based applications. A sauce that pumps easily warm may refuse the same nozzle cold, so the method is chosen on the real product, not the brochure.

Selection factors that decide the filler

  • Product behaviour: viscosity, particulates, foaming, temperature and shear sensitivity.
  • Container and closure: neck size, stability, fill height and closure type constrain the head design.
  • Controlled quantity: volume, net weight or visual level — decide which one is proven and how it is sampled.
  • Hygiene: whether the line needs CIP or SIP, and whether the seals tolerate the cleaning chemicals.

Knowledge

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

What filling methods exist, and how do they differ?
The main methods are gravity, overflow, piston, flowmeter (volumetric) and net-weight filling. Gravity and overflow suit free-flowing, low-viscosity liquids; piston suits viscous products and those with particulates; flowmeter and net-weight suit controlled-volume or weight-based applications. The method is chosen from product behaviour, accuracy target and container design.
What fill accuracy can I expect?
Well-configured volumetric and net-weight systems commonly hold fill accuracy within about ±0.5–1%, but the achievable figure depends on the product and speed. Net-weight filling may also carry legal metrology obligations, so accuracy belongs in the acceptance test, not the brochure comparison.
How do I choose a liquid filling machine?
Define the product (viscosity, particulates, foaming, temperature), the container and closure, the target output, and whether volume, net weight or visual level is the controlled quantity. Supply physical product and container samples so the supplier can test the filling method.
Do I need CIP or SIP on a filling machine?
CIP (Clean-in-Place) removes product residue without disassembly; SIP (Sterilize-in-Place) adds a validated thermal or chemical step to inactivate microorganisms. Food and pharmaceutical lines with hygiene requirements should confirm how the cleaning solution actually reaches every wetted surface before accepting a "CIP-ready" claim.
What is the difference between volumetric and net-weight filling?
Volumetric filling dispenses a fixed volume using a piston, flowmeter or timed valve, so its actual weight varies if product density or temperature changes. Net-weight filling measures each dose on a scale, so it holds weight accuracy across density shifts and is preferred where the controlled quantity is net weight or where legal metrology applies.
How much does a liquid filling machine cost?
Machines generally start around $1,000 for a manual unit and climb past $100,000 for automatic multi-head lines, with most businesses landing between $5,000 and $50,000. Typical bands: manual $1,000–$5,000 (20–50 bottles/h), semi-automatic $5,000–$20,000 (50–200 bottles/h), automatic $20,000–$100,000+ (200–3,000+ bottles/h). Budget by output band and request a quote that includes tooling, change parts and validation.
What containers can a liquid filling machine handle?
Fillers handle glass and PET bottles, cans, jars, pouches, cartons and cups, but the container diameter, neck size and stability must be specified up front. The filling method, nozzle design and capping or sealing station are all configured around your exact container, so supply physical samples for the supplier to test.
Should I choose an inline or rotary filling machine?
Choose inline when output is modest (roughly below a few thousand containers per hour) or formats change often, because it is simpler and faster to change over. Choose rotary when sustained high output and integration with rinsing and capping matter — rotary monoblocks reach the highest speeds but need more change parts and floor space.
