The core idea of this page: the decision is total cost of ownership and downtime risk, not the sticker price. New buys warranty, known wear and predictable output; used buys a lower entry price but you inherit the chamber wear, the liner history and the structural condition. High utilisation favours new; short campaigns favour used or rental.

New crushers

A new crusher comes with a warranty, a known chamber profile and documented commissioning. You can specify the chamber for your rock, choose the drive and control package, and expect the published product curve at the published setting. The cost is the purchase price and the steepest depreciation in the first years.

Used crushers

A used crusher costs less up front and is available immediately. The risk is hidden condition: a worn chamber produces a coarser product at the same nominal setting, and a cracked frame or a worn eccentric can cost more than the saving. Structural repairs on a crusher are workshop-scale jobs, not field fixes.

Used-crusher inspection checklist

  1. Chamber and liners: measure wear; a worn chamber changes the product curve.
  2. Frame and welds: look for cracks, especially around the jaw or cone mounting.
  3. Eccentric and bearings: check for play, noise and heat history.
  4. Drive and belts: worn pulleys and misalignment shorten bearing life.
  5. Hydraulics and controls: setting adjustment must move freely.
  6. Undercarriage (mobile): tracks, rollers and final drives are the biggest wear items.
  7. Records: a maintenance log, not a verbal promise.

Decision rule

  • High utilisation and long campaigns → new.
  • Short campaign, budget constrained, in-house maintenance → used, after a full inspection and a test run.
  • Occasional or one-off project → rental before purchase.

Cost and verification

Price both options on cost per tonne, including liner cost, power, labour and expected downtime. Verify a used machine by running your rock through it and sieving the product at the setting you need; a machine that cannot hold the setting is not a bargain. Ask for the liner replacement history and confirm parts availability for the model.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours is too many on a used crusher?

Hours matter less than chamber wear and structural condition. Above high hours, base the decision on measured liner wear and a test run.

Can I re-line a used crusher to restore the product curve?

Usually yes, and it is often the cheapest way to make a used machine produce a saleable product — but price the liners into the deal.

Is a used mobile crusher a good first machine?

It can be, provided the undercarriage and chamber are inspected. Mobile units carry more wear items than stationary ones.
