How to Shortlist the Right Inspection Manufacturer
Inspection vendors split by the risk you are catching, so shortlist on four criteria:
- What are you actually catching? Metal-only, or also glass, stone and bone? The answer decides metal detection versus X-ray before you compare brands.
- Is the product conductive? Meat, cheese and brine defeat basic metal detectors; X-ray or a product-compensated detector is required.
- Is weight a legal requirement? If the fill is regulated, the checkweigher must be calibrated against the destination market’s framework (EU MID / OIML R51 / WELMEC 6.5, or NIST Handbook 44 in the US).
- Detection sensitivity on your product. Ask each supplier to demonstrate detection on your actual product and packaging, not a reference sample — sensitivity changes with the product.
The inspection litmus test: hand the supplier your product with a known test contaminant and say: "Detect this at the line speed you quoted, on my product, ten times in a row." If the machine misses even one test piece at speed, it has not yet proven itself for your line.
