How to Shortlist the Right Labeling & Coding Manufacturer

The first decision is whether the job is labeling, coding, or both — then whether the code must be on the label (print-and-apply) or directly on the pack. After that, evaluate on four criteria:

  1. Substrate and speed. A labeler for wet-glass at 60,000 bottles/hour is not the same as a case labeler at 30 cases/minute; specify the container, surface and line speed first.
  2. Code permanence. Ask what the code must survive — scuffing, condensation, freezer, retort — and pick the technology (CIJ vs laser vs thermal transfer) from that, not from the brochure.
  3. Consumables and total cost. CIJ ink and make-up, thermal-transfer ribbon, and label stock are recurring costs that dwarf the machine price over its life; quote them together.
  4. Integration. Confirm how the coder or labeler talks to the line — product sensor, reject signal, and any track-and-trace or serialization requirement.

The labeling litmus test: send the supplier your real container and label, then ask it to run at your line speed and survive your real conditions — condensation, freezer, scuffing. A code or label that only works on a clean dry sample has not proven itself for your line.
